For years there has been controversy regarding discriminatory police sting operations which specifically target gay men throughout California. Below is a description of a typical bathroom sting operation.

One of the most prevalent of the sting operations involves undercover officers who pose as gay men looking for sexual interactions with other gay men in public restrooms. Next the police officer will wait for the suspect (victim) to expose himself or pursue a sexual encounter, all the while going along with the suspect. At this point the undercover officer will send a signal to his fellow officers, which is followed by the victim’s arrest. The targeted individual may be arrested for a variety of crimes, including loitering in the restroom for lewd conduct.
